Supporters of gun control seem to think that if the availability of guns is reduced, so will school shootings, and our kids and teens will be safer. If guns are banned, young people won’t be able to get their hands on them! Right? Let’s rethink this for a minute and then consider why gun training is a better solution than gun control.
If a criminal wants to rob a bank, is that person going to stop and say, “Wait… robbing banks is illegal. I shouldn’t do that!”? Chances are, no. Just like if a teen is actually planning on getting a hold of a gun and taking it to school to shoot people, I kind of doubt that teen is going to change his mind based on a law against guns. Drug addicts find ways to find their drugs, even though they are illegal. Criminals find ways to find guns, even if they are not readily available. Do we really think that a ban on guns will stop the underground market for them? Ha! Criminals have a really annoying habit of not obeying the law. Let’s protect ourselves from them by getting gun training, so when they come at us with guns, we won’t be caught empty handed.
If you look around at a time line of school shootings, you will probably notice that most occur in larger towns. New York, Fort Lauderdale, Santee, Oxnard, Springfield, Baton Rouge, Cleveland, Dover, Tuscon… all of these places have recently been affected by schoolyard shootings. However, how often do we hear about shootings in little farm towns, where kids are taught to use guns at young ages? Rarely, if ever at all. These kids have open access to guns and it doesn’t make them run out and shoot people. Obviously, it is not the availability of the weapon that is the problem.
If criminals are going to get a hold of guns no matter what, what happens if your teen is sitting in fourth period and someone whips out a gun? There is a ban on guns, so your kid doesn’t know how to react, how to disarm the assailant, how to handle the gun safely if he can even get a hold of it… this is all new to him. Do you want your child to be at the mercy of an angry youth with a gun? I don’t even have kids and that thought bothers me.
