Really? Many people reading this may think that I am joking but actually, I am quite serious. Several states are finding that an early release program for inmates will help them save money, thus aiding in the recovery of our economy. But is putting the public in danger really worth saving a few extra buck? Maybe you think so. But what if one of those released prisoners attacked your daughter. Still worth it? You may think that the states are smarter than that, that they would not release violent criminals onto the street. But in Kentucky, prisons are so overcrowded that this early release of prisoners program is going to benefit – and has been benefiting – some murderers, rapists and other violent offenders. Kentucky will release about two thousand inmates. Virginia will release about one thousand. New York will release about sixteen hundred. Other states are in this list as well, but my favorite is California. California is set to release fifteen thousand inmates over the next eighteen months – then about thirty thousand more over the next year and a half – that is fifty five thousand! It is so bad, that even California’s correctional officers’ union fears that this is going to cause more crime, thinking that some criminals will not be released wisely.
