Several states that are enacting the early release of prisoners program have stated that violent criminals, kidnappers or sex offenders will be included in the group of released inmates. Kentucky is one state that has not outwardly agreed to that, and as a result, some violent criminals, even killers, are on the list to be released. Colorado has already ‘inadvertently’ released a sex offender. Fifty one year old Benn Joe Rael was serving time for a nonviolent crime, all though he was a convicted sex offender, and he was released in the first round of freed prisoners. Mike May, House Minority Leader, said, “The release shows that the program isn’t working,” and also pointed to the fact that it is putting the public at risk. Out of the first ten prisoners that were released, seven of them have previously been convicted of some sot of violent crime. Three were convicted of domestic violence, and four were convicted of violent felonies. This is just bringing up memories for many people of the prison system failings in the past. Willie Horton was sentenced to life in prison for murder in Massachusetts back in the eighties. He was released for one weekend. On his vacation from prison, he robbed and raped a woman in Maryland. It did not work then. Why should it work now? We, as the law abiding citizens of America, are being put at risk and need to do something about it.
