What is your stance on gun training? When I talk about gun training with various people, I often get responses such as, “I do not think I should get gun training because a gun is not needed in all self defense situations.” I think this is where many people get confused about gun training. Common statements include, “I do not own a gun, so I can’t get gun training,” “I am scared of guns,” or, “I have never even seen a gun outside of pictures or movies.” While these comments are made by both men and women, I have found that women say them more. Why? I am a woman, so I can see how guns can be intimidating. They can be heavy, hard to handle and scary. But they do not have to be. If a woman knows the right way to handle a gun, her weapon can offer her a sense of peace and security that no man can. Women, how does it feel to not have to rely on a man for protection? Pretty amazing, I would say!

It is not a secret that it is harder to see in the dark than it is in a well lit area. Different types of learning styles can greatly affect the way someone learns information. People typically learn in one of three different ways: By Hearing (auditory), By Seeing (visual), or By Doing (kinesthetic). Say two people listen to the same lecture. If one of those people is an auditory learner and one is a kinesthetic learner, the auditory learner is going to get more out of the lecture than the other person. “I hate guns.” “I am a strong supporter of gun control.” “Guns should be outlawed.”
There are people who state these things every day. If you are one of those people, why should YOU get gun training? If you despise guns, you are never going to come in contact with one or have to use one, right?
The fact of the matter is, despite the pros and cons of guns and gun control, guns exist. Whether you like them or not doesn’t really have much to do with the fact that there are people that are going to keep using them for destruction, even if they are outlawed. Criminals will always find a way to get a gun… and if guns are outlawed, their plot to destroy will become easier to carry out because, quite frankly, who is going to stop them?
People opposed to alcohol have to deal with drunk drivers. People who don’t like rock music still hear it on the radio. So, who is to say that just because someone has a distaste for guns, that no one will ever threaten them with one? If a bank robber holds a gun up at a teller and the teller says, “Excuse me, I am opposed to guns,” will the bank robber apologize and put his gun away?
No one says you have to OWN a gun. But, whether or not you choose to own one, you should still get gun training, in case you happen to come across a situation where self defense is needed. Now imagine yourself walking away from that weekend, knowing that you can out shoot a police officer, a member of SWAT or an Army Sergeant. Did you have gun training experience before this weekend? It does not matter.
