In regards to gun training, you may have heard of the fifty percent rule. I have been researching Front Sight Firearms Training Institute, the gun training school just outside of Las Vegas, Nevada, for years… literally. I think the first time I stumbled across Front Sight was summer of 2008. Since then, I have not stopped, and I am always impressed with what I find. I love reading testimonials from other students of Front Sight and learning how founder and director, Dr. Ignatius Piazza changed their lives. I enjoy reading about the special gun training courses, the awesome deals that Ignatius Piazza conjures up and seeing his blog every week. I am grateful for the free Front Sight Newsletter that Ignatius Piazza writes himself, because I know I am always one of the first to know of the great things going on at Front Sight. I am impressed with Ignatius Piazza’s philanthropic heart and truly understand why he is known as the Millionaire Patriot. Learning about Ignatius Piazza’s charity giving always astounds me. I have always looked forward to learning the next thing about gun training at Front Sight Firearms Training Institute.
Truth be told, I had been wanting to get gun training for a long time before learning about Front Sight. I just never knew where to look. Then a friend told me about Ignatius Piazza, the Four Weapons Combat Master, and Front Sight. So I used it as my starting point and started looking around and doing research. Hi, again. Let’s take a quick review at where we are in my saga. (Random fact: If you Google “define saga” the first definition that comes up is “A long story of heroic achievement.” I kind of consider this story of my first visit to Front Sight Firearms Training Institute applicable. After all, Front Sight trains heroes.) Okay so my friend and I checked into Front Sight, the gun training instructors were epic, the lectures were incredible thus far and I was the worst shooter in the world.
One of the things about Front Sight’s gun training instructors is that they train you to not only be a perfect shooter, but they also train you to have confidence in yourself and in your shooting. Front Sight can train you to be a perfect shooter even if you are as bad as I was in the beginning. Founder and director of Front Sight, Four Weapons Combat Master, Dr. Ignatius Piazza, trained his gun training instructors well in all areas of gun training, including having exceptional customer service and a caring attitude. They work hard at helping their students embrace what they are good at in order to improve and perfect the things that they are not so good at. By encouraging a student’s strengths, that student gains a confidence that they could not have gained if the gun training instructors simply said, “We need to work on such and such.”
Ignatius Piazza’s instructors helped me find my strength: my presentation speed. What does that mean? That means that I was able to have my gun out of the holster and ready to shoot faster than some of the guys could get their hands on their guns. No kidding. This surprised me (and I think it surprised my friend, as well.) Well, my gun training instructors noticed that and they encouraged me and helped me get faster and better at presenting my weapon, so when it came time to actually shoot, I had way more time to focus and more confidence in my abilities. I was still shooting off target, but my confidence was growing and my instructors kept working with me. I felt like I was getting a private shooting lesson from a gun training instructor. But you know what? I asked around, and everyone else in my class felt the same way. Somehow, one range master and two gun training instructors made all of us students feel like we were the only kid in class. How great is that?
So why was I still shooting off target? My gun training instructors honed my skills so that I had more than enough time to aim. Have you ever heard the term “mashing the trigger?” Yeah… I was doing that. But we will go more into that later. Right now I want to tell you about one of the coolest features of Front Sight: the home invasion scenario. Yes, I literally got to walk through a house and shoot bad guys and save good guys. Whether you are a fan of Joe Montana or Aretha Franklin or not, it is hard to deny the fact that the two superstars are among the top performers of their genres. My next question is this: Can learning football or becoming a better singer save your life? In most situations, (unless this is one of those crazy movie scenarios where the antagonist must sing his way out of danger), probably not. When I was a freshman in high school, I was pretty good at math. In my geometry class, I did very well. I was not THE best, but I can easily say that I was probably above the average. Proofs killed me, but they killed everyone so it was not really that big of a deal. Then one day, my teacher sat a senior down next to me, introduced us and told me that it was my job to make her pass the class. Sharon (not actually her name… I changed that) had a decently low F in the class at that point in time, and she needed to quickly learn geometry or she was not going to graduate. So I taught her.
Every day, I learned what the teacher taught and then re-taught it to Sharon. We spent time together and she asked questions and I had to answer them… even though we were both learning the same information. Sharon ended up going from that F to a C and she graduated with her friends. That was awesome… but it wasn’t my big triumph. I had a different win. The class was silent as we all worked on our class work. I heard my own voice break the silence when I unconsciously said, “Oh my gosh… I get it!” I was, of course, talking about the proof that no one else in the class could figure out, and I was immediately hounded for an explanation. I finished the class with the highest grade and went on to secure myself a similar position in a number of math courses following. My point? My point is not to say I’m pretty good at math. My point is to say that when you have to teach someone something, it greatly improves your own skill in the area. You learn faster and retain more, while helping someone else do the same.

Having to help someone else learn forced me to really internalize the information because if I cheated, he would suffer. The concept of peer education helped me indisputably. It goes without saying that Ignatius Piazza really knew what he was doing when he set up Front Sight’s gun training program.
