Getting gun training is more necessary than you might think. One might think that if a woman had a restraining order against a man and the man threatened her or her children, the police would be obligated to protect them if she called them. Nope. Did you know that under Supreme Court Ruling, the police do not have an obligation to protect any individual? It is true. They only have an obligation to protect society as a whole. The Supreme Court case of Gonzales v. Castle Rock is just one of the many instances that proves this. Jessica Gonzales had her three children kidnapped by her ex husband, who ended up killing the kids. All the while Gonzales called police and begged them to help her, but they would not do anything… even though she read the restraining order that stated to the police that they needed “to use every reasonable effort to protect the children to prevent violence.”
Hartzler v. City of San Jose is another case that demonstrates this saddening fact. Ruth Brunell called the police on twenty different occasions, telling them that her husband was on his way to come kill her. They stated that she should call them when he got there. Yeah… he got there… and he killed her. Was the police department found guilty? No. The police have no obligation to protect individuals.
I have been familiar with this concept for quite some time and it sickens me each time I think about it. From the wise word’s of my friend’s Facebook status, “Who is obligated to protect me then? ME!” You are exactly right, Facebook friend that will remain unnamed. We owe it to ourselves to get self defense training and gun training so that we can protect ourselves when the police won’t. In South Africa, it is severely difficult to obtain a gun. Applicants that would like to own a gun need to pass a competency test, a background check, an inspection of their homes and the police need to license the weapon, among other things that factor into the application process. The waiting period is usually longer than two years, and many people are denied arbitrarily. The BGOASA (an association of gun-owners in South Africa) was disappointed to report that about 2% of applicants were successful in obtaining a firearms. In addition, in three years (2006-2009) the police of South Africa reported a loss of 8,286 firearms, many of which were stolen.
Austria has much less strict gun control laws. There are some guns that the government restricts, but for the most part, citizens can get a gun somewhat easily. There are guns that require permission through licensing and some guns that require registration, while there are some guns that do not require registration at all. Most guns can be obtained by any citizen that is 18 years of age or older.
Which country do you think has a lower murder rate?
South Africa, with its very strict gun control laws, has been reported as one of the countries with the highest murder rates in the world, while Austria has been reported as one of the lowest murder rates.
Interesting.
It just goes to show that gun control does not equal less murder.

How often do you find yourself in a situation that you really wish you knew self defense? Being a 5’3” girl, I often used to catch myself thinking these thoughts. I used to visit a certain bar with some friends. Our friend bartended there and we loved going out, having a good time and being at a bar that we considered safe. Our group was usually between eight and twelve people and we were also friends with the manager, so we were never worried about shady bar activities that sometimes happen. However, one boy changed all of that for me. He struck up a conversation and we went outside on the front sidewalk as many of us often did to escape the noise and get some fresh air for a few minutes.
After having my head slammed into a brick wall and being forced to do some questionable things, I was afraid to go outside by myself. I was nervous to be in places that people could not see me and I rarely walked outside alone after that. If I had been in Code Yellow instead of Code White, this would not have happened. I would have been able to stop the guy before he even touched me, because I would have been more aware of what was going on.
What is this Code Yellow and Code White? They are both phases of the Color Code of Mental Awareness, as taught by Dr. Ignatius Piazza at Front Sight Firearms Training Institute. How did you spend your Fourth of July? Many people spent their Independence Day at the barbecue, enjoying burgers and maybe a cold one or two. Some people party their cares away. But there is one thing that is for sure: Walking down the street on July Fourth is a huge reminder of how great it is to be an American. People carry flags and fly them high, proud of where they live and where they come from. We, as Americans, are afforded some of the greatest freedoms we could ever ask for. I don’t know about you, but I would really like to keep those freedoms.
It is almost time for another Election Year. Seeing what has happened over the last several years, it is obvious we really need to think about who we elect as our new President. What are the issues that are really important to you? For many people, like myself, the issue of health care is important. Taxes interest a lot of people. The Department of Defense interests a large group of people. Another issue that is super important to me is that good old Second Amendment: The Right to Bear Arms.
We have come way too close to losing that right… and I want a President that is going to help us keep it. However, Four Weapons Combat Master, Dr. Ignatius Piazza, has worked hard in the past to help our lawmakers know just how important that right is to us, and he will not stop working. Many people across America have conflicting views on this Amendment. Some love it. Some hate it. Some think it is okay but just not for them. Some are indifferent. Some are afraid of it. Some think it should go away and some think it should stay. I wonder why people want to do away with the Second Amendment. Why would we want to take away such a strong tool of self defense? Why would we want to put ourselves at risk?
Sure, at face value, the Pro Gun Control argument sounds awesome. “Getting rid of guns will reduce crime and keep us safer.” Who doesn’t want to be safer? I know I would love to live in a place with zero crime and not have to worry about walking down the street late at night, clutching my purse against me and looking over my shoulder to make sure I am not being followed. That would be great! But is getting rid of guns really going to get me to that place? If it can, I would really like to see how.
“If guns are outlawed, there won’t be any risk of getting shot, because people will not own them.” Can the owners of this argument please explain to me why I have seen people waste away in front of me due to drugs? I cannot understand how that happened. I also do not understand why parents worry about their children getting wrapped up in drug use. Drugs are illegal. People “shouldn’t” be about to get a hold of them if they are illegal… much like guns, right?
I don’t know about you, but I refuse to be naïve and believe that these gun control advocates have the right idea. Bad guys are going to break the law. If guns are outlawed, why would that stop them from getting a hold of them? All it will do is put us at risk, because our attackers will have guns and we will have something less powerful or effective.
Yes, guns in untrained hands are dangerous. But guns in well trained hands provide a great avenue for self defense and family protection. What we should be focusing on is getting people gun training instead of taking away a means of protection. With all of the recent news about the riots in Egypt, it puts across an interesting question. What if something like this were to happen in our country?
Let’s face it. We do not have a perfect government. As much as some people would like to think this is not true, we are not above some politician saying something unfavorable or our President doing something against our wishes. Riots have happened in America before, and they will likely happen again. Scary.
If you are a store owner or work in retail, what would you do if people started breaking windows and looting your store? If you ever walk on the sidewalk, what would you do if someone approached you and tried to rob you? If you have a home, what would you do if someone broke in and started taking your stuff? If you have a family, can you protect them? I am not trying to scare you into reading what I am writing. I am just trying to ask you some really important questions. How about I answer those questions first? I don’t work retail or in a store but I do have an office job. My desk is right by the door. If someone were to charge in, I would know what to do to protect my coworkers. I do walk on the sidewalk quite often. If someone were to try to rob me, not only would I know how to stop them, I would know that they were coming. I can protect my house. I can protect my family. How can I answer these questions so confidently? There are so many people out there who are apprehensive about gun training. They do not want to own a gun, think that guns should be illegal and/or hate the idea of them in general. However, no matter how anti gun you may be, the fact remains that a gun can be a superior tool of self defense in a number of situations. I hate the idea of robbing a bank. But as much as I hate it and even though robbing a bank is illegal, bank robberies still happen. It is a gross thing to rape someone and I am thoroughly against it.
