Many people choose to practice their Second Amendment rights by owning a gun. I think this is a great thing, because I am a strong supporter of the Second Amendment. However, many of these people do not actually get trained in how to use their guns. They don’t get gun training because they think that owning a gun is enough. “I just own this just in case. The chances of me having to use it are so small.” “I’ve used guns for so long; I don’t need to go get professional gun training.” And my personal favorite: “If the situation called for it, I’d just know how to shoot well.”
Here’s what I say to those people. If the situation called for it, you’d be able to shoot well, eh? So, if someone had your sister in a headlock, was holding a gun to her head and was about to shoot her, you’d be able to raise your gun and shoot him, while completely missing your sister? If someone was running off, carrying your child, you’d be quickly able to stop him? If someone broke into your room in the middle of the night and pointed a gun at you in the darkness, you’d be able to beat him to the shot, even though you aren’t even holding your gun yet and can barely see him? The stress of any of these situations is going to greatly inhibit your shooting ability, not increase it. You are likely to miss your target, if you even get a shot at all. Why do you like living in America? Many people will answer this question with a simple, “Because we have freedom.” Others take a little longer to spit it out. They usually say something like, “The United States is the best country in the world!” When pushed further to find out why they think this is the best place to live, they answer just like the first group of people. Freedom is what makes the United States so wonderful. We even have a slogan, branding us “The Land of The Free.”
In fact, freedom was such a precious thing to our Founding Fathers that they left their home country and wrote and signed a document about its importance. Lack of freedom caused these men to pack up their families and flee overseas. If this freedom is something that created this country and is something that has worked brilliantly over the last couple hundred years, why would anyone want to start taking it away? Isn’t that just a back step into what our Founding Fathers were trying to save us from?
The first Ten Amendments to the United States Constitution are something really special: The Bill of Rights. These ten rights were created as the ten most important freedoms; ten rights that cannot and will not be taken away from citizens. Things like Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Religion are included among this list, along with a very important one to me: The Right to Keep and Bear Arms. Right now, our current government, along with many of its supporters, is trying to get this right revoked. This is kind of a scary thought, considering the fact that one of the reasons the Right to Keep and Bear Arms was claimed in the first place was to protect us from the government. Government officials are smart! Get the guns out, and there is less of a chance people can protest against you! Let’s wake up and be smart, too.
I agree that people that don’t know how to use a gun should not be using them. Guns are dangerous when placed in untrained hands. In April of 1996, something happened that would change the world. It would make this a safer place for us to live, and offer clear explanations to one of the great controversies we have dealt with for decades. This controversy is, at present time, our guaranteed right, as stated by the United States Constitution. However, as some people see it their job to rewrite something that has worked for us for centuries, our right to keep and bear arms just might be imposed upon sooner than we thought. I guess the words “shall not be infringed” don’t mean much to certain politicians.

How many people do you know that steal music on a regular basis? Outlawing guns will only disarm the law abiding citizens. And, it’s a fact that a criminal is more likely to attack an unarmed person than an armed one. Why would a rapist try to rape a gun toting woman?
Gun control does not mean crime control. All it does is put us at danger and infringe upon our freedoms. I was approached yesterday at dinner with a disappointing standpoint from someone very close to me. We were talking about the different gun laws in different states, concealed carry law and open carry laws. He said, “You know what is interesting is in places where guns are not allowed, there is less crime.”
My response? “That is absolutely not true. In fact, it has been proven time and time again that places with strict gun control laws actually had crime rise when the laws were put into action. Think about it this way. Criminals and bad guys are going to have a gun, whether it is against the law or not. They are criminals and breaking a gun control law does not really matter to them. But now, instead of having a gun to protect themselves and their families, the law abiding citizens have to fight against these armed bad guys empty handed. Gun control does not lower the crime rate; it just puts the innocent people in more danger.”
Eventually, he said, “Don’t get me wrong. I believe in guns and think that people should be able to own them. I own several guns. But it’s these people that go around using them that don’t actually know HOW to use them properly that make it dangerous for the rest of the country. Guns are dangerous. But they are very useful if you know what you are doing with them.”
I was glad he had that point of view about the importance of gun training. I responded, “I agree completely that people need to get gun training if they want to own guns. But the idea of gun control reducing crime is not accurate. That is more of the issue in the places that want gun control. It’s not gun control that they need. It’s gun training.”
As described in “More Guns, Less Crime (Again) in 2008,” there have been a lot of gun control laws that have been changed or taken away completely in this country. As a result, even though gun control supporters feared the worst, violent crime has been declining and even reached a 35 year low in 2008. The murder rate was even more impressive, and these statistics have been credited to less gun control. Our Founding Fathers had a dream for us. Before breaking away from the lives they were brought up to know and claiming beautiful independence, they did not have the freedoms that they wanted. Coming to America as adults, they only got to live with these newfound freedoms for a short time. Because of them, as law abiding citizens, we have the opportunity to live with the freedoms we have today for our entire lives, from the day we are born until the day we take our final breath of nourishment. Some government officials attempt to rob us of those freedoms. We will not let them.
I do not use the term “rob” lightly. We need to understand that our freedoms our personal. They are ours. They belong to us and we have to OWN THEM. “Amending” our Constitutional Rights is robbing us of the gift that our Founding Fathers bestowed upon us. Not okay.

In the debate of gun control, there are two very different sides. One side supports the idea of gun control, while the other side firmly believes in the Second Amendment, which guarantees law abiding citizens the right to keep and bear arms. Unfortunately, it really seems that the two sides have trouble seeing the other.
Many people are gun control advocates because they just do not understand the concept that proper gun training increases safety. Some people support gun control because they have been a victim or know a victim of a gun crime, so they view guns as unsafe.
