Whenever I am trying to learn a new skill, like when I am getting trained at a new job, taking a dance lesson or trying to get better with my guitar playing, I know that I learn best by doing. I learn best by doing because I am a kinesthetic learner. I need hands on training in order for me to really get a concept and to remember what I learned.
Some people learn by seeing. These people are called visual learners. If Bob is a visual learner, he needs to see someone perform a task in order to learn it. If Bob sees someone do task A, Bob will be more likely to understand and remember how to perform task A himself. I can get something out of visual learning; it definitely helps strengthen what I learn through kinesthetic learning, but visual learning alone is not enough for me. For some people, however, this is all they need and kinesthetic learning is totally unnecessary.
Other people learn by hearing. Auditory learners can listen to someone explain how a task is done and then are usually able to do the task themselves. To me, personally, this type of learning is like trying to squeeze pennies out of a paper dollar… it can be done, technically, if you go to the bank or find someone that has change for a dollar, but it doesn’t come easily and will have to be redone every time a new task needs doing (or a new dollar needs to turn into pennies). Some other people thrive on this type of learning.
It has been shown a number of times that no matter what type of learner you are, you can benefit from aspects of all of them, with some exceptions, of course. A combination of the three types of learning is the best bet when trying to learn something, especially something really important. So what qualifies as something really important? Some people want gun training to be able to defend themselves and their loved ones. Some people want gun training because they see shooting as a really awesome sport and they think it is fun to go to the range or to the desert and shoot some clay pigeons. Some people want gun training just because it is considered “cool” to be able to shoot a gun well. Where do you stand?
I can tell you that my fiancee and I have completely different views on shooting. He shoots for sport. I see guns as tools of self defense. He has been shooting nearly his entire life. I only somewhat recently picked up a gun for the first time. To him, he learned how to use a gun for fun, shooting at the range and competing with his friends. Being able to use a gun for self defense comes after that and only as a result of having a great knowledge base from years of practice. To me, I learned how to use a gun in order to keep myself safe. Using a gun at the range is merely practice time for me, so I can be better prepared should I have to use a gun for self defense.
So who is right?

What did you do this weekend? This weekend, my fiancee and I went looking at guns. We are likely going to each buy a gun this year to keep in our home once we get married. We are both First Family Members at Front Sight Firearms Training Institute in Pahrump, Nevada, so after we get our guns, we will likely sign up for a self defense gun training course to hone our shooting skills and become proficient in our new weaponry.
When I took my first self defense handgun training course at Front Sight, I was interested to see that some people had Glocks, others had 1911s, someone had a revolver and others had different handguns. Each different handgun had specific nuances that needed to be learned, because not all handguns are exactly alike. One thing I really enjoyed about Front Sight and I respected about my gun training instructors was that they were knowledgeable in the usage of all different types of guns, and wanted to make sure we were, too. The instructors took the time to teach us all about the different types of handguns when different techniques were needed, such as during an emergency reload. (You cannot load a Glock the same way that you load a revolver, etcetera.)

Police are supposed to serve and protect, right? These men and women are hired to take care of us as citizens, correct? They carry guns and pepper spray and batons… several weapons that should be of use to them in dangerous situations. We are brought up knowing that we can always feel safe when a police officer is around. Gun control is a widely supported idea, because the only people out there that should have guns are these guys. Right? Not so much.
What happens when these men with the guns abuse their power? If strict gun control is in place, where are we then? How can we protect ourselves? I may sound like I am being overly anxious or paranoid. However, my coworker came to work today with a scary story of something that happened yesterday pretty close to her house.
The off duty police officer, hanging out in a bar, walked up to a group of guys that were playing darts. He started talking to them about darts and then said flat out, “I am better at darts than you are.”One of the men replied, saying, “Aw, you suck at darts.” Kind of a stupid conversation, I would say, and definitely not one to lose a life over… but in this day and age, we really have to be prepared for anything.
The police officer replied with, “That’s why I’m a cop. I can do whatever I want to do.” A few more words were exchanged, but the conclusion of the story is that “whatever he wanted to do” just so happened to be pulling out his gun and shooting one of the guys three times, killing him. What would you do if you witnessed something like that? Would you have just sat and watched? Or would you have tried to take down the guy with the gun? Would you have presented your own gun in defense of the unarmed man? Wait… if gun control is active, how could you have done that?
Gun control is a bad thing. It will not help anyone. What we need to do is get adequate gun training so that we can be prepared to protect ourselves and others in dangerous situations.
