How old are your kids? Are any of them getting ready to go off to college? You’ve probably talked with them about school, good grades and not getting mixed in with the wrong crowd. But what are you doing actively as a parent to help protect them? Self defense training and gun training is a great option for teens that are about to leave for college. They will be on their own, away from you. They need to be able to protect themselves, because you will not be around to do it for them.
Are you a teen getting ready to move out? Have you received any gun training or any other form of self defense training? If not, why not?
Let me share with you a quick story about myself. Before I had ever even heard of the gun training school called Front Sight Firearms Training Institute or Dr. Ignatius Piazza, I was one of those people that figured I would never be attacked. Those things happen to other people… not me and not my friends. I knew that if I happened to be attacked, (which I wouldn’t be), my adrenaline would overcome me and I would be able to escape. Then when I was eighteen, one of my best male friends, if not the best male friend of mine at the time, took me on a walk to talk about the breakup I had just gone through. I trusted him, so I didn’t think about the fact that it was dark outside and there were no cars driving by. He took me to his old school ground. He was such a good friend of mine, showing me around his school, so I didn’t question walking down some stairs as he was telling me stories of his past. Once down the stairs I realized that we were completely hidden from the outside world. He pushed me against a wall and to the concrete ground and tried to have sex with me, despite the fact that I didn’t want to. Did my adrenaline kick in and take over? No. I shut down completely. I wasn’t prepared. Did I know how to defend myself and push him off? No. I had never taken a self defense course and he outweighed me by forty or fifty pounds. Luckily, he stopped for a moment too long and I was able to break free. But what if he hadn’t stopped? Most predators won’t.
Now that I have attended Front Sight, I feel more confident in myself and my ability to handle a threatening situation. This gun training school teaches true self defense. Shooting a gun is the same during the day as it is at night, right?
It is frightening to hear how many people will actually answer this question with a strong, “Yes.” I am scared for those people to have to use a gun to defend their lives or the lives of their loved ones in the middle of the night. Using a gun at night or in low lighting is much, much different than using one in the middle of the day, or in a room where there is plenty of light. Many people choose to practice their Second Amendment rights by owning a gun. I think this is a great thing, because I am a strong supporter of the Second Amendment. However, many of these people do not actually get trained in how to use their guns. They don’t get gun training because they think that owning a gun is enough. “I just own this just in case. The chances of me having to use it are so small.” “I’ve used guns for so long; I don’t need to go get professional gun training.” And my personal favorite: “If the situation called for it, I’d just know how to shoot well.”
Here’s what I say to those people. If the situation called for it, you’d be able to shoot well, eh? So, if someone had your sister in a headlock, was holding a gun to her head and was about to shoot her, you’d be able to raise your gun and shoot him, while completely missing your sister? If someone was running off, carrying your child, you’d be quickly able to stop him? If someone broke into your room in the middle of the night and pointed a gun at you in the darkness, you’d be able to beat him to the shot, even though you aren’t even holding your gun yet and can barely see him? The stress of any of these situations is going to greatly inhibit your shooting ability, not increase it. You are likely to miss your target, if you even get a shot at all. Sadly, some of these people who are getting laid off are the people that are supposed to be there to protect us. Our cities are finding that there are less and less law enforcement officers on the streets to patrol and keep us safe. It is a scary thought to think about how long it can take for the police to arrive on a scene if something bad happens. By the time those flashing lights are seen, the burglar, rapist or child predator could be long gone. So what can we do to protect ourselves for those times that law enforcement leaves us hanging?
