Many people think that if they want to get gun training, they have to know at least something about guns beforehand. Why? I am a woman, so I can see how guns can be intimidating. They can be heavy, hard to handle and scary. But they do not have to be. Pretty amazing, I would say!

I have a friend that loves to go running. She and her boyfriend both do. Yet, they do not go running together. She told me once that she tells him when she is leaving and when she expects to be back, so if she is not back by a certain time, he will know to go looking for her. She is usually gone about thirty to forty minutes, depending on which route she has chosen that particular day.
She does not have self defense training.
I told her that is scary and not a good idea to go out alone without being trained in how to defend herself. Say she leaves the house at 6:30. She tells her boyfriend that she will be back to the house around 7:00. At 7:10, he will probably think she has changed her plans and gone on a longer route. Maybe by 7:30 he will start to get worried. What if she were to be attacked within ten minutes of leaving her house? Even if he started looking for her right at 7:00 when she was supposed to be home, that is twenty minutes that her attacker has to do whatever he wants. But chances are, he will follow the above listed time line. That is nearly an hour my friend’s attacker will have now.
If this were your girlfriend, would you be okay with it? If it were you, is this an agreeable situation?

We are familiar with the budget crisis of the United States. We are also familiar with the early release of prisoners program that is being enacted because of that budget crises. One of the main supporting statements about the prisoner’s early release program is that “no violent criminal will be released.” However, seeming as how it has already happened, that statement remains false. Still, many states are strongly supporting it as truth. What many of us have not heard about is called “resettlement overnight release” or ROR. This ‘money saving’ program grants criminals – violent criminals not excluded – vacation time from prison. They are given anywhere from four days once a month to four weeks release and are supposed to use this time to go to rehabilitation programs, do community service or spend time with their families. Many of them are choosing other options. Harry Roberts, for example, was in prison serving a forty two year sentence for murdering three policemen. He was awarded this ROR, and used his free time to terrorize a woman. Thomas Murray was also convicted of murder. He was awarded ROR and spent his day breaking and entering into an eighty year old woman’s house, murdering her with a hammer. A man named Robert Foye was in prison for attempting to murder a policeman. He raped a sixteen year old girl on his ROR.
Over the past few years, the number of licenses for ROR have been increasing. In 2008, 11,599 inmates were given this opportunity. Several states that are enacting the early release of prisoners program have stated that violent criminals, kidnappers or sex offenders will be included in the group of released inmates. Kentucky is one state that has not outwardly agreed to that, and as a result, some violent criminals, even killers, are on the list to be released. Colorado has already ‘inadvertently’ released a sex offender. Fifty one year old Benn Joe Rael was serving time for a nonviolent crime, all though he was a convicted sex offender, and he was released in the first round of freed prisoners. Mike May, House Minority Leader, said, “The release shows that the program isn’t working,” and also pointed to the fact that it is putting the public at risk. Out of the first ten prisoners that were released, seven of them have previously been convicted of some sot of violent crime. Three were convicted of domestic violence, and four were convicted of violent felonies. This is just bringing up memories for many people of the prison system failings in the past. Willie Horton was sentenced to life in prison for murder in Massachusetts back in the eighties. He was released for one weekend. On his vacation from prison, he robbed and raped a woman in Maryland. It did not work then. Why should it work now? We, as the law abiding citizens of America, are being put at risk and need to do something about it. Since these programs have already started taking effect, the best thing we can do is learn how to protect ourselves. The prisoners of Illinois have started being released from prison early. The process of releasing these prisoners will continue over several weeks, eventually totaling about one thousand released inmates, which is on the light end if you compare it to the rest of the country. Virginia is another state that is ‘only’ planning on releasing about one thousand prisoners. New York is proposing an early release of sixteen hundred, Kentucky plans on two thousand, and California is going to release about fifty five thousand over the next few years. No, I did not type that wrong. I did not mean fifty five hundred. I meant fifty five thousand. Scary! Also, California is planning on reducing the parole population to further save money for the state. Seventy thousand parolees will soon be let off parole. Ohio’s prison system was built to hold thirty six thousand inmates, but currently holds fifty two thousand. Many states are promising that “only non violent criminals will be released,” but in states like Kentucky, even murderers made the early release list. In addition to letting prisoners out of custody early and reducing parole populations, prisons will be less guarded, as thousands of prison employees are being let go.

What do you think about the prisoner early release program that is being initiated throughout the United States? Several states are starting to release prisoners early, due to budget cuts. Some people think this is a great idea. Others disagree. I am one of those people who disagrees. Prisoners that get released early are likely to just mess up again, finding themselves back in the slammer and angering tax payers everywhere. Take convicted burglar, Dennis Berthold, for example. He was released early from Oregon State Correctional Institution due to a thirty percent decrease in his sentence. Two weeks later, where is he? Back in prison! Over four thousand prisoners in Oregon are eligible for a change in their ERD (earliest release date)… meaning that nearly a third of Oregon’s inmates can be let out early. This early release program is opposed by several groups, including prosecutors and crime victim advocates. It is putting fear in the minds of citizens who do not know how to handle the situation. All over the country, prisoners are being released early due to a new prisoner early release program designed to save America money. Prisons are becoming overcrowded and America is trying to cut budget costs wherever they can. Apparently, letting prisoners out of confinement seems to be a great idea to some officials. In Florida, almost four thousand inmates are expecting to be released. This program is not supported by a variety of groups, including the Department of Corrections. Most states are claiming that only non violent prisoners are going to be released, but not all states are complying with this, which is rather frightening. When criminals get out of jail, they are usually subject to things like probation or parole, and are court ordered to attend certain correctional programs. However, these cost money, too. In addition to releasing prisoners early, many states are also cutting programs for freed inmates, such as drug rehabilitation programs and other self help courses, meaning criminals are less likely to learn the skills they need to learn to become a productive member of society.
