Getting gun training is more necessary than you might think. One might think that if a woman had a restraining order against a man and the man threatened her or her children, the police would be obligated to protect them if she called them. Nope. Did you know that under Supreme Court Ruling, the police do not have an obligation to protect any individual? It is true. They only have an obligation to protect society as a whole. The Supreme Court case of Gonzales v. Castle Rock is just one of the many instances that proves this. Jessica Gonzales had her three children kidnapped by her ex husband, who ended up killing the kids. All the while Gonzales called police and begged them to help her, but they would not do anything… even though she read the restraining order that stated to the police that they needed “to use every reasonable effort to protect the children to prevent violence.”
Hartzler v. City of San Jose is another case that demonstrates this saddening fact. Ruth Brunell called the police on twenty different occasions, telling them that her husband was on his way to come kill her. They stated that she should call them when he got there. Yeah… he got there… and he killed her. Was the police department found guilty? No. The police have no obligation to protect individuals.
I have been familiar with this concept for quite some time and it sickens me each time I think about it. From the wise word’s of my friend’s Facebook status, “Who is obligated to protect me then? ME!” You are exactly right, Facebook friend that will remain unnamed. We owe it to ourselves to get self defense training and gun training so that we can protect ourselves when the police won’t. Say someone were to break into your house. What thought would you rather have in your head:

I love Front Sight Firearms Training Institute. I get a huge kick out of talking about it, writing about it and talking about it some more. It is kind of like an obsession of mine, as I am sure you are aware. The way I see it is this: Learning self defense is extremely important. I want people to get the best self defense training possible. I do not want to rave about a sub par self defense training place. Thus, I speak of Front Sight. All though I seriously believe gun training is very, very important, especially if you wish to own a gun or someone in your home owns a gun, I also believe that other types of self defense training are just as crucial. There are places (too many of them) that do not allow someone to carry a gun. So, us, as law abiding citizens, obey what we are told and do not carry a gun to those places, right? Well, then there are bad guys. These bad guys do not seem to care that the law says they cannot do it, and they bring the guns in anyway. So what do we do if we encounter someone who is carrying a gun and we don’t have one?
There are other places where it is extremely difficult to sneak a gun into, but these bad guys we speak of are likely to be prepared to fight. An example of a place like this: an airplane. Post 9-11, it is super difficult to get a nail file or a bottle of water on board, much more a handgun. What’s the bad guy going to do? Approach the pilot and say, “Sir, would you mind if I take over flying this here plane? I’ve got a mountain to crash into and I am really running out of time.” ?? Or maybe he will just simply say to you, “Hi. I’d like to have your wallet now. Okay, thanks!” (…as you hand it to him?) Right. These guys are going to fight. So what do you do if someone tries to fight you? Can you protect yourself and your family?

I sat in a room with a few hundred other people. Everyone in the room had a gun on his or her hip. And I have never felt safer.

It is pitch black in your house. You and your wife are sleeping. The kids are at some sleepover. The doors are locked. You wake up suddenly and something just feels off.
